How to Care for Roses

Once you have successfully planted your rose garden and have noticed your new flowers have begun to take on life, proper maintenance of your roses is essential to making sure they continue to grow. Without proper care for roses, they may die due to over-crowding, lack of water or unhealthy soil. Here are some steps to ensure happy and healthy growth of your rose garden.

Depending on the size and proximity of your roses, it is important to prune your roses in early spring. Once the rose starts to show signs of new growth, tiny red buds will start to swell. These buds will later grow into new branches. It is important to cut out any obviously dead or damaged branches first to stop them from spreading as well as keep your roses looking beautiful and healthy. Then cut out all but four or five healthy stems. This is to ensure your roses don’t continually grow too wildly and become over-crowded in your garden.

Another important factor in rose care is to fertilize your garden regularly throughout the growing season. Roses demand lots of nutrients for best growth and flowering. Proper care for roses may involve spreading slow-release granular rose food which can be mixed into the soil to help feed the plant all season long. However, make sure you properly read the directions to ensure you are not over-feeding your roses. You can also use liquid fertilizer every three to four weeks throughout the spring and summer, but be careful with this as well. Over-feeding your flower can be just as harmful as under-feeding.

The Different Types of Roses...

Probably the most important step in caring for your roses is to water them regularly. Especially with newly-planted roses, you should water them about 2 to 3 times per week depending on rainfall. Because the soil needs to be kept healthy and moist to make plants grow, you should make sure your roses are getting about one inch of water per week. It is best to water your roses lightly using a light sprinkler to avoid over-watering. If you are using a garden hose, trickle the water over your garden lightly to avoid drowning your roses.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time ensuring your roses grow properly and maintain a healthy growth process, but by neglecting the proper maintenance of your garden can result in the death of your flowers. Simply by pruning your roses, at the beginning of the year, as well as ensuring the richness of soil and watering them properly will allow for a beautiful, healthy garden and the avoidance of problems in the future. Care for roses doesn’t need to be a complicated process.
